The Requirements

To meet the basic qualification for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. In addition, to be a good fit for the Process Controls Engineer opportunity, you will have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, computer science, information technology or electronics is preferred. Other equivalent degree or relevant experience will be considered. 
  • 7-10 years of related experience. 
  • Experience in Advanced Process Controls using DMC or equivalent process control tools is highly desirable. Quick question for you - click here
  • Experience with alarm management and abnormal situation management applications is also desirable.
  • At least 3-5 years of DCS and programming experience, strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with Process Control Networks, Industrial Firewalls, DCS and PLC systems, instrumentation, field wiring practices and troubleshooting. Quick question for you - click here
  • Process control network administration and network security experience is highly desirable. 
  • Experience working with P&ID’s, Instrument loop drawings and DCS graphics.
  • A commitment to safety.
Physical Demands:
  • Frequent walking, standing, and sitting required.  Must be able to reach overhead, squat, kneel, climb and grasp.  Must be able to lift light, medium, and heavy objects.  Must have 20/40 vision or better, have depth perception, full field, and able to distinguish colors as required to perform duties.

You will work 9-hour shifts, on a 9/80 schedule. You'll also need to be flexible in your schedule, and able to work a rotating on-call schedule and overtime as needed.

The Role

Reporting to the Control Systems Supervisor, as Process Control Engineer, you will be required to administer, support, troubleshoot, repair, document, build and commission complex computer-based process control, instrumentation systems and applications. You will be responsible for maintaining the operational performance of the refinery PCN, DCS, APC, PLC and other complex instrumentation systems to meet operational goals, and to make improvements to increase refinery productivity and efficiency.

This is a senior, lead role position where you will manage projects and share your expertise with others on the team. You will leverage your strong experience to serve as a front-line resource and make an impact on our refinery operations. You will directly impact system reliability, availability and performance, and help us as we transition and migrate from legacy systems to new systems. 

You can expect to spend approximately 65 percent of your time at your computer, and the remainder of time out in the field. This role will primarily support software, but you may be involved with hardware as well.   

Your major accountabilities will include:
  • Process control systems administration, firewall-security and maintenance support including problem diagnosis, unscheduled maintenance repairs, planned preventive maintenance and system upgrades.
  • Control systems programming, control configuration changes, graphic display building.
  • Also responsible for supporting Advanced Process Controls including multivariable and model predictive control applications.
  • PLC programming may also be required.
  • Improve process control schemes to optimize refinery unit performance. Identifies new profit opportunities for unit optimization and introduces new technologies to the refinery.
  • As part of the controls group team, provide technical support on Honeywell TDC, Foxboro IA, Triconex SIS, PLCs and other complex special purpose control systems as required.
  • Must be able to work with a team of multiple disciplines to support ongoing process control system improvements and new project initiatives.
  • Support safety shutdown system testing and support the development of test procedures.
  • Educate and support operations personnel on the function of unit process controls, monitor control loop performance and tune control loops.
  • Manage field installations, construction, commissioning and system testing for projects as required.
  • Support the refinery 24-hour on-call and emergency procedures.
  • Follow refinery safe work practices and ensure that all control systems support work follows the refinery's Process
  • Safety Management procedures.
  • Other duties as required.
