The Requirements

To meet the basic qualification for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. To be a strong fit for the Reliability Mechanical Engineer opportunity you will have: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in at least 1 of the following engineering disciplines: Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Petroleum..
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in a reliability environment. 
  • Experience in an industrial setting; ideally in a refinery, petrochemical/chemical plant, and/or power plant. 
  • Strong familiarity with predictive maintenance techniques (vibration, temperature, oil lubrication analysis). 
  • Experience with Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF), Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA).
  • The ability to take ownership of both fixed equipment (pipes, tanks, vessels, etc.) and rotating equipment (fans, pumps, compressors, mixers, gearboxes.
  • Proven computer skills; including familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite of products. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to translate complex technical information to non-technical contacts. 
  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills. 
Preferred:
  • Familiarity with API rules and ASME regulations for vessels. 
  • Fixed equipment: Metallurgy and corrosion experience. 
  • Experience with SAP and databases.

The Role

Reporting to the Sr. Reliability Superintendent, as the Plant Engineer for the Par Pacific Refinery, you will be responsible for conducting engineering studies, making recommendations to improve the reliability of refinery equipment and insuring we are in compliance. You’ll take ownership of both fixed equipment (pipes, tanks, vessels, etc.) and rotating equipment (fans, pumps, compressors, mixers, gearboxes - oil & lubrication recommendations, mechanical fuel, bad actors, failure analysis, etc.) Quick question for you - click here

This is a true “jack of all trades role” and you will be involved with conducting investigations of equipment problems and failures (RCFA); making recommendations to prevent future problems; expediting the planned and unplanned repairs of equipment; and training employees in machine use and lubrication to increase reliability. You will provide overall refinery support of Reliability Programs for Condition Monitoring, Preventive Maintenance, Critical Equipment Monitoring, Lubrication, application of API standards, and development of appropriate repair standards. 

You will join a team of one other Engineers and you will also partner closely with our craftsmen in the field, a Planner and with other business partners at the Par Pacific facility. You will also directly interface and coordinate machinery activities with a wide variety of contacts throughout safety, maintenance, project and process personnel as well as contractors.

More specifically, your major accountabilities will be to: 
1. Evaluate equipment performance and provides equipment reliability improvement recommendations by using RCM analysis.
2. Champion the machinery bad actor program. Develop and/or assist in the strategies for the resolution of bad actors.
3. Steward the refinery benchmarking, condition monitoring, lube oil, and fixed asset monitoring systems to ensure proactive activities and ongoing improvement.
4. Investigate equipment problems and failures for root cause and provide engineering recommendations for resolution including economic impacts of various alternatives.
5. Review and approve all proposed machinery spare parts changes including additions to the spare parts lists and spares for new equipment.
6. Use SAP to update equipment repair histories, provide technical data updates, and input necessary changes to equipment bill of materials.
7. Conduct cold eyes hazard/operability reviews of new equipment designs and existing equipment.
8. Assist maintenance planner to develop repair work scopes for major machinery components for equipment repaired in-house, equipment sent out for repair and equipment repaired during turnarounds.
9. Interface with equipment suppliers on retrofits or upgrades.
10. Assist Maintenance with troubleshooting rotating and fixed equipment problems in the field.
11. Participate in the MOC Process.
12. Perform engineering calculations (utilizing the latest software) for re-rating pressure vessels.
13. Perform engineering calculations (utilizing the latest software) for equipment nozzle loads and pipe stress analysis.
14. Proactively seek out cost savings and reliability enhancement opportunities.

You must be available to work on off-hours especially for emergencies and turnarounds, and it will be essential that you can work effectively with others at all levels and functional areas of the refinery.
