The Role

Role Overview
Our company is growing fast, and we’re looking for a go-getter who already has enough knowledge and experience to immediately take over some of our hands-on work while bringing the higher level mindset that will help us build processes, structures, and standards to set our IT group up for future success.

You’ll manage the operational aspects of our Cloud Services solutions, both Public Cloud and Private Cloud and other infrastructure disciplines including but not limited to Active Directory, virtualization, messaging (Exchange), storage platforms, and Backup/Recovery. Additional responsibilities include private cloud capacity (with colo data centers located in North America), including maintaining the processes and documentation necessary to manage these data centers.

Team Structure
Reporting to the IT Director, Infrastructure & Security, you’ll work independently as well as collaboratively with the in-house team, which includes a Network Architect/Engineer for Unified Communications, a Senior Infrastructure Architect for Windows, and a Conference Room Technology leader. You’ll routinely work with diverse virtual teams across our large, matrixed organization, and will also work with contractors to complete some tasks.

Key Goals
A big part of the role will be to complete the necessary hands-on work to enable and support the use of the SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS services available to the business. This will include technical aspects such as network connectivity and storage options, but will also include the education and coordination between teams. On a day-to-day basis, you’ll develop or receive business requirements; architect and design a solution based on our infrastructure capabilities; upon approval, build what you’ve designed; and once it goes into production you’ll act as the escalation point, keeping track of logs, completing break-fix, solving service degradation or outages, etc. You’ll also serve as the liaison between Infrastructure teams and application teams.

However, there’s also a strategic component to your goals. When you become part of this team, you’ll be in a position where you’ll truly be helping to shape the future of our IT function for the company. For example, we’re in the process of transforming IT Services into a hybrid environment (a mix of on premise and public cloud), and you’ll provide an end-to-end and broad view of a system at the architecture and design stage, supplying key requirements for risk mitigation, quality of services and non-functional aspects of the system in terms of performance, scalability, etc. We’re also setting up the structures that will make our work more streamlined, more effective, and make it easier to onboard future acquisitions as well as to grow our team as the company grows.

Some of your specific tasks will be to:
  • Engineer and administer, monitor and support all aspects of the Microsoft based infrastructure environment
  • Manage and support Microsoft Active Directory Federation with Azure Active Directory, as well as Directory Services, DFS, DNS, GPO
  • Manage production and pre-production technology systems in a hybrid cloud/datacenter environment including but not limited to: Active Directory, Monitoring/Alerting (Solarwinds), Citrix, VMWare, Storage platforms (Hitachi, Nimble), Backup and Recovery Systems (CommVault, Veeam), OS patching (SCCM)
  • Automate building systems and deploy applications, script repetitive tasks, and develop automation solutions to remediate problems
  • Collaborate with the Architecture team to develop integrated workflows for our Operations team
  • Monitor production systems, respond (proactively and reactively), and troubleshoot incidents
  • Ensure all production operating systems are patched current according to governance requirements
  • Participate in and/or lead strategic projects
  • Document small-to medium-scale projects and deliver presentations with minimal supervision
  • Anticipate problems and analyze ways to mitigate risk, and recommend process improvements
  • Dissect complex situations and refocus on critical technology tasks
Note: this description is intended to give you a general overview of the position and is not an exhaustive listing of duties and responsibilities.

Professional growth with a strong mentor
Your supervisor is ready and willing to help you grow, both from a technology standpoint, and with leadership and management skills. His goal is to set you up for success in your current role, but also to help you build your career here. For example, as our function grows you could be in a great position to take on the management of a small team, if that’s within your skillset and desire.

Unique Culture

Great Team

Your supervisor is not a micromanager -- he gives the team autonomy to do their jobs. But he also wants you to have a good work/life balance, with the goal to work hard and play hard.

Location, location, location
Because Par Pacific is located in some of the most beautiful places throughout the country, our employees get to make these places their home and enrich their lives. Pictured: Par Pacific’s retail operations offer gasoline and other petroleum products in Hawaii under a new local brand, Hele, as well as the Union 76 and Tesoro brands. We operate 91 stores on five islands.

Keys to Success

While you’ll enjoy strategic components of this role (such as helping to create processes and opportunities that streamline our function), you’ll need to come in with the knowledge and skill to complete the hands-on, tactical execution of the tasks and functions to which you’re assigned with very little oversight, beginning on your first day here. If you’re the right fit here you’ll be passionate about both sides of the role, as well as about learning new technologies and taking on new tasks.

The ideal candidate for this role is a go-getter who understands how to handle a fast-paced environment. When your supervisor hands you a job, you ask the right questions, then figure out how to complete the task. We don’t work in silos here; instead, we keep lines of communication open and expect everyone to be transparent. You’ll be part of the process to assist others and make suggestions, and we’ll expect you to be equally willing to take feedback and input from the team. When your supervisor doesn’t hand you a task, you’re always looking for something else to do, looking for continuous improvement opportunities, jumping in to help where needed, and quickly changing priorities as needed to meet deadlines.

As we build the structure and processes that will standardize and streamline our function, we’ll need team members who are flexible, who embrace the start-up feel of the business, and who are passionate about taking the time and putting in the energy to get everything in order so we can move forward as a business. If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity, then send your resume today!
