The Requirements

The ideal candidate for this role will have hands-on experience in a variety of areas including designing compensation and bonus structures, doing compensation frameworks, developing job description levels, performing benefits design and analysis, including 401k plans, working with vendors and consultants and more.  

To be a strong fit for the role of Compensation and Benefits Specialist, you will have:
  • A bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or similar field required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in U.S. compensation and employee benefits. 
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws/regulations related to compensation, employee benefits, and general human resources practices.
  • Technical knowledge of competitive compensation practices and State and Federal legal requirements.
  • Excellent project management skills including planning, estimating, managing and delivering projects to maximize benefits while minimizing risk.
  • Outstanding analytical skills in preparing comprehensive reports and interpreting data.
  • Solid negotiation skills.

The Role

Opportunity Overview
Reporting to and working in collaboration with the Total Rewards Director, as Compensation and Benefits Specialist, you will assist in the administration and execution of Par Pacific’s employee compensation and benefits total rewards programs. The high reaching mission and strategy of these programs are threefold. They will:
  • Ensure that the company maintains competitive pay and benefits practices in the marketplace.
  • Attract and retain top talent.
  • Ensure that the total rewards structure is internally equitable and externally competitive.
To meet these objectives, you will assist with data generation and metrics for benefits reports in order to facilitate decision-making and support the evaluation of the effectiveness of programs and benefits.

Role Details
You will join an outstanding, ten-person shared services Human Resources team working out of our corporate offices in Houston. Taking direction from the Total Rewards Director, you will help design and develop compensation programs, such as incentive and retention bonus structure. You will take on a variety of responsibilities from putting together a salary form to analyzing employee data, such as attrition percentages, to doing research and working closely with the benefits consultant. You will take your lead from your supervisor who will provide the vision and objectives, but will also influence that vision through your research and input. Some of your specific duties will include:
  • Collaborating with the Total Rewards Director, providing support to managers and employees regarding compensation and benefits programs.
  • Assisting with review of job descriptions by validating essential duties, education and experience requirements and determining FLSA classification. Gaining knowledge of the company’s job grading tools; assigning the appropriate pay grade.
  • Assisting in analyzing the competitiveness of the base pay and benefit plans on a local, regional and national context of total compensation. Gathering and evaluating internal records and applying statistical calculations to establish comparisons with related industry employers.
  • Leveraging data to partner with managers to review and approve compensation changes and offers for existing and prospective employees.
  • Assisting with the completion of surveys to include, but not limited to, annual salary planning surveys, compensation surveys, benefits practices surveys and any others as needed.
  • Under the direction of the Total Rewards Director, updating and developing new salary structures to retain employees and attract talented candidates.
  • Assisting with the annual salary budgeting process, maintaining costing allocations and assisting with the incentive bonus plan process.
  • Coordinating the management, maintenance and updating of pay for performance systems and tools used for compensation activities such as the merit review process. Working with the internal HR team to ensure that the HRIS is updated to reflect changes to salary structures, bonus programs, incentive programs, benefits programs, etc. Ensuring data integrity through regular audits and analysis.
  • Monitoring trends of legislative and business changes for impact on total rewards and ensuring legal compliance for total rewards programs.
  • Supporting Affirmative Action compliance and reporting.
  • Performing other technical and analytical duties, including extracting data from internal and external information systems to support compensation, benefits and employee engagement activities, perform special compensation and benefits analysis projects, provide data for SOX and internal/external audit compliance.
  • Assisting with vendor relationship management.
  • Coordinating data requests for auditors and consultants.
  • Identifying opportunities to simplify and streamline existing practices and procedures.
  • Providing continued support of functionality of HRIS with projects, analysis, updates, and data validations.
  • Maintaining professional and technical knowledge by attending education workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Preparing and providing training on compensation and benefits related initiatives (such as pay for performance, open enrollment, pay philosophy, etc.) as assigned.
