The Requirements
To be a strong fit for this opportunity you will have:- A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (Chemical, Petroleum, Mechanical Engineering preferred) or Environmental Science. Experience may be substituted for an exceptional candidate.

- A working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (specifically Excel), Adobe Acrobat, and ability to work with specialized database programs (RegPerfect, SAP, UltiPro).
- Strong technical skills with the ability to collect, manage, and analyze data and communicate conclusions based upon their analysis.
- Ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
- Strong work ethic with ability to adjust work schedule to accommodate unexpected changes and obtain external certifications (Smoke School, RCRA, DOT, Hazwopper) required to perform job function.
- Strong interpersonal skills required to build effective cross-functional relationships to solve problems and function effectively within tight deadlines, prioritize work, and provide appropriate feedback on progress of projects.
- A history of working with State and Federal Regulators and experience with the Code of Federal Regulations is preferred.

We're on a rotating on-call schedule that will require you to work one weekend every fifth or sixth week. When you are not on call, you can expect to work a standard schedule from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. We'll look to you to be flexible in putting in the time needed to get your job done.
The Role
Reporting to the Environmental Site Manager, as an Environmental Engineer/Environmental Compliance Specialist, you will be responsible for implementation of assigned aspects of regulatory compliance, particularly in managing Federal and State programs as they relate to refinery operations and its associated facilities. You will be responsible for understanding the technical / regulatory basis for your assigned duties, actively monitoring refinery systems related to environmental compliance, being proactive in identifying, communicating, and resolving concerns for potential compliance issues, effectively managing compliance records, and participating in agency inspections in their assigned areas of responsibility.Although you’ll gain exposure to multiple functions within the environmental compliance sector, you will initially focus your efforts on hazardous waste / contaminated soil duties. You’ll also be cross-trained in other areas such as emissions, air quality and water. We have several types of listed hazardous waste that we have to dispose of on a regular basis and we will look to you to maintain compliance and gain an in-depth understanding of these regulations.
More specifically, your essential functions will be to:
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and safe work practices, both on and off the job.
- Comprehend applicable federal, state and local regulatory requirements and effectively implement programs as required to demonstrate compliance.
- Actively monitor existing refinery systems (wastewater system, analyzers, air emission spreadsheets, RegPerfect database) and programs (LDAR, RCRA, NPDES) for continued compliance and be proactive in identifying, communicating and resolving potential compliance issues.
- Manage compliance data including written reports and electronic database systems.
- Develop effective relationships with internal work groups as well as contractors and external agencies to promote effective resolutions to compliance issues.
- Demonstrate effective time management skills with the ability to perform daily work duties while regulatory compliance reporting or project management deadlines.
- Weekend duty (on-call) required on a rotating basis. Emergency on-call may be required on weekends and after-hours (spill response or responding to plant environmental issues).
- Lead and/or assist with assigned projects.
- Perform other duties and special assignments as necessary.

Keys to Success
Although your knowledge of environmental sciences will be key to your success here, to truly excel in this role you will also need excellent interpersonal and communication skills. This is a position where you will collaborate with a variety of key stakeholders throughout the refinery and beyond. Internally, you’ll partner with Engineers and Operations, and externally you can expect to build relationships with contractors and other third-party agencies.This isn’t your standard desk job. Instead, you can expect to spend your time split between hands-on activities out in the field and admin work at your desk. We're looking for a proactive professional who will bring fresh ideas to the table and help us to continue to improve this function.
It will also be important that you are comfortable with some ambiguity. There will be a lot of on-the-job training, and we don’t have formalized processes and procedures in place. It will be essential that you can hit the ground running without everything being completely outlined for you.
