The Requirements

To be a strong fit for the Retail & Logistics Accounting Manager opportunity, you will have: 
  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related area.
  • 7-10+ years of relevant progressive accounting experience, including responsibility for complex, multi-site accounting functions; experience with c-stores and/or gas stations is ideal. Quick question for you - click here
  • Outstanding supervisory experience (7+ years) including success managing, mentoring, coaching and developing a team(s).
  • Experience working with Accounting for multiple locations, operations and logistics.

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Word, PowerPoint and intermediate to advanced proficiency in Excel (e.g. complex/compound spreadsheets; VLOOKUPs, HLOOKUPs, pivot tables, etc.).
  • Strong technical acumen to work with IT on streamlining processes and building effective shortcuts.
  • A strategic mindset with the vision and change management skills to develop and implement ongoing improvements.

The Role

Role Overview
Reporting to the Director of Operational Accounting, as Retail & Logistics Accounting Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day, monthly and year-end accounting processes for Par Pacific's c-store business (91 stores) and logistics segment in Hawaii. Your key responsibilities will fall into three major areas:
  1. Serving as a business partner to operational leadership in Honolulu and as liaison to Corporate in Houston related to accounting for retail and logistics segments.
  2. Improving accounting processes and procedures, establishing thresholds and ensuring workflow efficiency and timeliness. You will look for improvements in all areas impacting retail accounting, including data transfers, workflow/workloads, close processes, elimination or offloading of tasks, particularly administrative, etc. 
  3. Staff development. You will ensure that every team member, beginning with two supervisors, has the tools and training they need to thrive, excel and grow in the position they earned. Post improvements, you'll also evaluate whether we have the appropriate staffing levels to meet demands. 
Role Details
You will work in our Honolulu office, including approximately 50 professionals, and serve as an important member of our leadership team. You'll manage an accounting team including two supervisors, one in charge of retail and the other in charge of logistics (terminals, barges and pipeline), who will report directly to you, and individual contributors who report to the supervisors. 

With dozens of sites, retail accounting operations are complex and require a manager and team that understands the requirements for multiple sites, exercising judgment when needed to filter lower priority queries as appropriate. The team will manage month-end close, working to streamline and shorten the process to five days and fulfilling internal and external audit requests. You must be willing to put in the time and energy to develop a best-in-class operation, but we expect hours to shorten as efficiencies are implemented.

Some of your specific tasks will include:
  • Reviewing journal entries during each month-end close.
  • Preparing accounting review of Authorization for Expenditure (AFE) for retail businesses and coordinating the recording of AFEs in SAP.
  • Ensuring costs are appropriately captured in the financial statements.
  • Preparing daily, weekly and monthly balance sheet account reconciliations.
  • Ensuring transactions that comprise balances are clearly identified and supported, and that monthly activity is identified and is appropriate given the nature of the account.
  • Maintaining compliance with SOX and recommending improvements to allow for increased financial accuracy/streamlined processes.
  • Providing assistance with internal and external audit requests.
  • Preparing various reports and statements as required and requested.
  • Assisting with projects as necessary.
  • Managing change and serving as an extra hand-on-deck with daily execution.
